Injectafer Iron Medication under fire for severe side effects. Injectafer a popular iron replacement therapy has recently come under fire for serious and possibly catastrophic side effects including death.Recently a personal injury and product liability lawsuit was filed by Katherine Crockett, who claims that she developed a serious case of hypophosphatemia (HPP) or low phosphorus blood levels after receiving Injectafer injections.

According to Crockett, she suffered from severe low phosphorus blood levels, requiring prolonged hospitalization to treat the low phosphorus condition.

What is Injectafer?

Injectafer (ferric carboxymaltose) is an intravenous medication that is given via a two-part injection protocol that is used to treat iron deficiencies causing anemia. According to medical experts, many patients are reporting HPP, a serious phosphorus deficiency, after using the Injectafer drug.

Which Big Pharma companies are involved?

The Japanese giant Daiichi Sankyo and its subsidiary, Daiichi Sankyo US, Luitpold Pharma, American Regent, Vifor Pharma, the European-based company are the manufacturers and distributors of Injectafer.

Medical studies link low phosphorus levels to Injectafer

A recent study in the Journal of Clinical Investigation compared the Injectafer side effects with those of patients who received Feraheme, another popular iron-deficiency intravenous medication. 2,000 patients were studied and 50.8% of the Injectafer patients developed severe hypophosphatemia. Feraheme patients had an HPP prevalence of less than 1 percent (0.9%).

FDA Warning letter regarding misleading video

In 2015, the FDA sent a warning letter to one of the Injectafer manufacturers, Luitpold Pharmaceuticals Inc., noting that their promotional video was false or misleading, omitting key side effects and made misleading claims about Injectafer.

Signs and Symptoms of Injectafer side effects

Patients with Injectafer hypophosphatemia side effects include severe weakness and exhaustion, bone pain or fractures, numbness, and confusion. If hypophosphatemia is left untreated catastrophic side effects can occur including respiratory failure, cardiac arrest, seizures, coma, and death.

Hypophosphatemia is considered dangerous when the body’s level of phosphorous drops below 2.0 mg/dL (moderate) or 1.0 mg/dL (severe). The more acute or prolonged the hypophosphatemia, the worse symptoms such as extreme fatigue, illness, and muscle weakness can get.
